Craftsmanship plays an important role in the edition
Matías has chosen to work by hand on this portfolio of prints, and every detail, even the portfolio itself, is handmade in Spain. This may be a way of paying homage to the painters he admires, but it is also a way of showing that it is possible to be successful without participating in capitalist logic and without becoming an artist-factory.
Although his subjects and techniques may vary, he always remains faithful to painting for painting's sake. His work has always been on the fringes of figurative painting, before it reached the current heights of market success.
Matias is a non-conformist and a romantic, which is why he has created this collection of prints. -
About Matías Sánchez
Tübingen, Germany. 1972. Lives and works in Sevilla, Spain.
Throughout his career he has developed an abstract style of painting that incorporates a very personal type of figuration with expressionist influences. His work can be understood as a spokesman for the society in which we live, through the constant flow of images, television, tabloids or the prevailing mediocrity in institutions. His work defends painting above all else.
It was in the 2002 edition of ARCO that Matías's work received enormous public and critical acclaim. At ARCO 2003, his 6-metre-long oil painting was on the front page of El País newspaper, which announced this edition of the fair.
His work has been exhibited in contemporary art centres such as CAC Málaga, where he had a solo exhibition, and CAAM - Atlantic Centre of Modern Art (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria).
In recent years he has participated in many important international fairs such as Art Chicago, Art Central Hong Kong, Estampa, MACO - Mexico Contemporary Art, Art Stage Singapore, Art Monaco, India Art Fair, Contemporary Istanbul, Art Toronto, Art Moscovo and Beirut Art Fair.
His works are in private and public collections such as the Art Museum of the University of Southern California. Los Angeles, Colección Nazem, Beirut, Colección John Marquez, Miami, Colección Miaow Meow, Hong Kong, CAC Málaga, CAAC Sevilla, Benetton Art Spain Collection, Caramba Collection, Luc Caurichon, Paris, or the S. Goodman Collection, New York, among others. -
